Freedom

It’s official….after months of going back and forth on starting my blog, and wondering if people will actually read it, or even care what I have to say…I took the plunge! So welcome to my first official blog post!

Now please bear with me, as I continue to update this site with all of the recipes I’ve posted on Facebook over the past few months. Just like me, this blog is a work in progress. In the meantime, take a look around. I’d love to hear your feedback. Plus if you have a favorite recipe that you know is not “real food” approved (uses things like: refined sugar, all-purpose flour, ingredients with “natural flavors” or food coloring, etc), then let me know! I’m one of those weirdos that loves a challenge, so throw ’em at me! I’d love to help you turn your favorites into real-food approved recipes!

A bit about ME

Yes, I know you can simply click on the “About Me” tab, but I’m going to get real with you all here for a bit.

My husband and I have been married for almost 10 years (together 13), and together we have built a beautiful life. We live in the home he built for us 6 years ago, nestled neatly in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC. Our little acre of heaven is close enough to town that we can come and go anytime we need without feeling like it’s a huge burden, but far enough away that the only sounds we hear are the trees swaying in the breeze, birds chirping, and the occasional car driving up our gravel road. It’s quite peaceful.

Me…? I’m not perfect.

I’m not a Pinterest mom. My home is not always clean and tidy, and we do not eat “gourmet” meals every day. I’m actually a mess. I’m a SAHM of 3 amazing kiddos, and as much as I LOVE this job as “mama”, it is exhausting. Some days it takes every ounce of energy in me to get out of bed and “adult”. But, no matter how crazy our days can get, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. God gave me this opportunity, and I want to honor Him the best I possibly can.  Some days that’s hard. Ok…most days. When your 5 year old goes from sweet to sassy in 10 seconds flat, then back to sweet…it’s enough to make your head spin. Or when your 3 year old has a set of lungs that could rival a screaming Marmot (seriously…youtube that baby), and your sweet little 2 year old just loves you so much that you cannot walk out of her sight for even a second, before her little world crumbles to the ground…I tell you, that can make for a long, and extremely exhausting 12 hour day.

It’s moments and days like what I just described that make me sit back and realize exactly how important my job is.

Not just as “mama”, but as a wife to my husband. God put me here for a reason. Right now, that reason is to raise my kids to be descent humans and followers of Christ, and to be a loving and supportive wife to my husband, who works so hard to provide for us. Some days all of this seems so overwhelming and impossible. I often feel like I’m in the trenches of life and sequestered to my home, only to emerge on the rare occasion we get invited to a play date (remember the screaming Marmot…no one wants to hear that), or for my weekly SOLO grocery store trip. Regardless of how crazy life gets, I find so much freedom, when I just… Give it to God.

With this freedom, I have been able to realize a few passions of mine, that I love doing, and allows me to hopefully help others.

Cooking real and healthy food has been such an amazing, eye-opening experience for me. Our family eats better, and in turn, feels better! It’s definitely work, and takes effort, but after the things we’ve learned so far, I don’t see us ever going back to the way we used to eat. I plan to talk about specifics through this blog as well, at some point, to let you all in on WHY we chose to make the change. My other huge passion, is teaching people how to use essential oils safely and effectively, to help take care of themselves and their families. We’ve been using oils for over a year now, and I honestly don’t know what we did before we started using them. They’ve been huge for us and have allowed us to treat small, everyday issues in our home. We’ve been able to phase out 90% OTC and prescription medicines and that’s been a HUGE relief. (If you want to know more about the oils I use and how I use them, shoot me an email through my “contact” page and I’d love to talk to you!) I also have a small little photography business on the side, that, when time allows, I love to do! My favorite thing to photograph (other than my family), are expectant mothers and newborn babes….I think it allows me to get my “newborn” fix without actually having another baby. 😉 If you’re curious about my work, you can check that out at B. Whitson Photography.

Now, he will hate me for doing this, but I’m going to brag a bit on my husband.

He took a leap of faith about 3 years ago to quit his job and start his own business. He was tired of working for other people, and felt that God was leading him to something else. He started D.K. Whitson Furniture and it’s been an amazing ride ever since. I’ve loved sitting back and watching God work in fulfilling a life long dream of my husbands. So if you need some amazing and handcrafted custom furniture pieces made, look no further….you’ve found your man! 😉 Seriously…check out his website. He’s amazing.

Side note: I just took an hour long walk outside with the kiddos and it. was. glorious. Now I’ve got 2 of them down for their afternoon naps, and the J-man is about the have some quiet couch time to rest. I think I’ll take this time to grab a bite to eat, and relax before the mess that is my kitchen starts driving me crazier than I already am.

Father’s Day

I feel bad right now, that I am writing a post for Father’s Day, but completely neglected Mother’s Day. Not really sure why…maybe I just felt too overwhelmed and scattered (as is the life of a mom) to really stop and take time to reflect on my short experience up to this point, as a mother. But as I was sitting here, making my grocery list for the next week, my mind started to wander (again….as is the life of a mom…or any woman, actually). I started thinking about my dad, and my husband, and the many other men in my life who have had an impact on my life or the lives of my children.
